- Built on SMC (Smart Money Concepts) foundations
- Fair Value Gap = price imbalance that the market often returns to fill
- OTE = optimal trade entry, typically the 62–79% Fibonacci retracement zone
- Silver Bullet = the New York 10:00 am ET setup
ICT (Inner Circle Trader methodology) is the trading framework developed by Michael Huddleston that gained mainstream traction on YouTube around 2020. It is best understood as a refined dialect of SMC (Smart Money Concepts): both read price as the footprint of institutional positioning, but ICT adds specific time-of-day setups and a vocabulary that newer traders need to learn deliberately. In practice, the framework is unusually demanding — the rules sound mechanical, yet identifying a clean Fair Value Gap in real time takes months of screen time.
Core concepts
- Fair Value Gap (FVG) — a three-candle imbalance where the middle candle leaves an unfilled gap. ICT traders watch for price to return to this zone as a continuation entry.
- Mitigation Block — a prior order block that price revisits to “mitigate” unfilled institutional orders.
- OTE (Optimal Trade Entry) — the 62–79% Fibonacci retracement zone, treated as the high-probability entry pocket inside a swing.
- Silver Bullet — a one-hour window around 10:00 am New York time when liquidity grabs and reversals are statistically more common.
- Power of 3 (AMD) — Accumulation, Manipulation, Distribution. Daily price tends to build a range, sweep one side, then expand the other way.
How it differs from SMC
SMC focuses on structure (Break of Structure, Change of Character, order blocks). ICT inherits that foundation and layers on time-based setups and the FVG concept. That said, the line between the two has blurred — most modern educators teach a blend.
Risks for prop firm traders
ICT setups often involve waiting for a specific liquidity sweep, which means fewer trades per week. On a prop firm evaluation with a minimum-trading-days rule, this can leave you short of the day count even when your win rate is healthy. Plan extra days into the calendar.
