- Market structure analysis built around institutional flow
- Order Block — the price zone where institutions accumulated their position
- Liquidity Sweep — the stop-hunt move that clears retail orders before reversal
- BOS / CHoCH — Break of Structure and Change of Character, the trend-confirmation signals
SMC (Smart Money Concepts) is the framework for reading price action as the footprint of institutional positioning rather than as a stream of indicator signals. In practice, the framework is most useful when combined with a clear set of entry rules — the concepts alone are descriptive, not prescriptive. ICT (Inner Circle Trader methodology) builds on SMC and adds time-of-day setups, but the structural vocabulary below is shared across both schools.
Core concepts
- Order Block. The candle (or candle cluster) where institutional orders were accumulated. SMC traders mark these zones and watch for price to return as a high-probability re-entry.
- Liquidity Sweep. A move that takes out stop-loss orders sitting just past a swing high or low. Specifically, this is read as institutions clearing retail stops before a reversal in the opposite direction.
- Break of Structure (BOS). A higher high in an uptrend (or lower low in a downtrend) that confirms trend continuation.
- Change of Character (CHoCH). The first lower high in an uptrend (or higher low in a downtrend) that signals a potential trend reversal.
- Premium / Discount zones. The upper and lower halves of a price range, defined by the 50% retracement of the most recent leg. Institutional entries cluster in the discount zone for longs and the premium zone for shorts.
How to apply on a prop firm
SMC entries often require patience for a clean liquidity sweep, which can leave you short on the minimum-trading-days requirement during a quiet week. By contrast, ICT setups (built on SMC) are more time-targeted and can produce more trade attempts. In short, plan extra calendar days into your evaluation if SMC is your primary framework.
Risks and limits
The SMC vocabulary is descriptive after the fact, which makes back-tested results look better than forward-tested ones. Be honest about whether you can mark these zones in real time, not just in hindsight.
